Micro Needling, also called CIT (Collagen Induction Therapy) is a wonderful skin rejuvenation treatment. The premise of this treatment is that the skin heals itself when wounded. Micro Needling creates precise “micro-wounds” that incite wound healing and in particular, collagen and elastin formation. These zones of micro injury also serve as powerful micro-channels or conduits to allow for delivery and optimal penetration of such as our anti-wrinkle or anti-pigment therapeutic serums.
Micro Needling is relatively new to North America, but has been a well established practice in Europe for over 2 decades. Recent innovation has automated and refined the process of Micro Needling so that we can provide treatments with a small hand-held MicroPen. The MicroPen holds a 12 needle cartridge and these needles are used to pierce the skin at precise, predetermined depths depending on the results we want to achieve. Treatment sessions are easy to tolerate and take 20-30 minutes. Most patients describe the sensation as rubbing sand paper on the skin. Occasionally for deeper treatments such as acne scars, a topical local is applied onto the skin prior to the treatment session. Most patients experience some heat, redness and swelling for 1-2 days. Collagen induction does not occur over night. The best results are noticed with a series of treatments spaced 3-4 weeks apart. Ongoing collagen remodeling will improve the look of the skin for months after your treatments. This treatment is not a replacement for laser therapy but can augment its effects.
